Poverty predicts educational outcomes in the UK more strongly than in any other developed country, and inequalities have an effect from a very early age. By the age of three, children from poorer families can lag as much as nine months behind their better-off peers. This gap grows over time, with many poor children falling two years behind by the age of 14.

Reading from the Start aims to improve literacy skills, language, communication and social interaction and foster a love of reading, in 150 children aged 2-5 who live on Peabody housing estates in London. The project has been running since 2014 and has supported over 600 children and their families with early literacy, confidence and an understanding of the and family bonding and delivering over 1100 books directly to children’s home.

Every month children registered on the Reading from the Start programme receive a book, along with materials to encourage and support their parents to read with them. Over the past four years parents and their children have also been invited to weekly reading groups in Thamesmead, Waltham Forest, Islington and Hackney where a professional and trained volunteers have run lively and engaging sessions enabling families to learn together, developing confidence and skills and build peer support networks.

With support from our partner, Vinci Facilities, we now want to further develop the Reading from the Start programme on targeted estates in Waltham Forest and Thamesmead.  This year we are piloting a new model for the programme in Thamesmead, where alongside receiving the books, a cohort of families registered with the project will receive support from an early years professional through a home-visiting programme.
